Spanish Language
As students prepare for success in the 21st century, the ability to speak more than one language is imperative. Del Mar Pines students receive from one to two hours of Spanish language instruction per week, depending on grade level.
Students begin by learning the sound of the language through songs and stories. Since Spanish is a pure phonetic language, with each letter making just one sound, students study using a process known as palabra generadora making new words and combinations of words by listening to specific sounds. Once children have acquired this ability, they begin reading in Spanish and associating Spanish words with visual pictures. Building a vocabulary is done simultaneously with learning Spanish syntax, through a guided and directed process.
Students also learn about the cultures, traditions and literature of all Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world.
