Del Mar Pines School

Science

The science curriculum at Del Mar Pines involves the processes of observation, experimentation, creativity and a variety of "hands-on" activities. Instruction is provided in both whole-class and cooperative group formats.

Sixth grade students extend their knowledge to include laboratory investigations and formal lab write-ups, with one hour of lab science in addition to the one and one-half hours of standard science instruction.

Del Mar Pines incorporates a number of special events and productions to complement its science program. During Science Discovery Day, authorities from public- and private-sector groups share their scientific and/or technical expertise. From physics and chemistry to biology, earth science and geology, children see how a vast assortment of scientific principles and applications impact their lives.

Students also have opportunities to build volcanoes, and design buildings that will resist the effects of artificially-produced "earthquakes." They undertake marine science activities aboard a specially-outfitted oceanographic ship, and create their own ecosystem. And after studying geology, students attend a half-day workshop at the Gemological Institute of America.
